st francis and the mp3 player
I consider myself a faithful man, for many years I have been true to my first love and never looked for anything more. This past year though my eye has been drawn and I find myself admiring another’s aesthetic beauty. I have rubbished this ‘other’ in public but coveted in private. Oh the shame! This ‘other’ has a name, and her name is Apple Mac… When we bought a laptop last year, we stayed away from the Mac primarily because you cant get the school software we need for the children. Also we know PC’s and they say ‘better the devil you know’ don’t they. But yep to all my Mac using friends I admit it; I am jealous. The sleek and simplistic design is so lovely. Alek and I went for a drool in the new Apple store in Skopje and I was pretty amazed at their new notebooks and super large LCD displays etc.
That is all by way of introduction to my current conundrum: Can I have an ipod please? This isn’t a question of spending money on a frivolous excess necessarily, although if an ipod cost a tenth of the price I admit I would be less hesitant. We were given some money for Christmas which hasn’t been spent yet so we can decide to spend money on a present for ourselves. My dilemma though is how can I justify buying and owning such a frivolously excessive toy? I cannot justify it through necessity i.e. I don’t ‘need’ it. It would enable us to clear out all the wma. Cd’s and DVD’s we carry round with us and space saving is the word of the hour. And I would use it… a lot. But, we are trying to live without clutter, a simple existence without the trapping of possessions. I can’t imagine the Benedictine (or any other) rule being amended to read; ‘One room with one door, one table, one chair and an mp3 player’. So I am struggling, can I have an ipod or not? What do you think? My Mum is coming over from the UK in a few weeks so we could get it brought over and so need to make a decision one way or the other pretty soon.

This is a dilemma indeed, but I feel that you can have an ipod as you can download some really good podcasts of talks and stuff and teaching materials about the Big G, so surely that's a good thing?!
BUT do you really need an Ipod video? Maybe just one you can listen to would do the trick and be less cluttersome!
I miss you guys...hope you're all well.
And Mimi - congratulations on the bike riding ... I can't ride a bike AT ALL and I'm supposed to be a grown up!
lots of love Jenn xxx

Greetings from Helsinki!! I maybe not the best person to be asking, but my considered opinion would be it would be good for you music wise. I got my I-River (Yes I strayed from the rest of the ipod flock) and have never looked back. You could get so much on one and it would help with space. So unless there are other things you really need then I don't see why not. Which is why I don't have a new mountain bike.
Cheers

I have recently bought an ipod nano & it is brilliant i must say. It hasn't got the fancy video thing on it but i have the internet & a tv so i don't really need it. Plus TV is quite mind numbing so steer clear i say!
The nano is really sleek & takes up no room at all. I think you should go for it because you'd really appreciate it on your bike rides alone etc...
Love you loads

Scott,
If it would make your decision any easier, i would love to pay the 10%, that you wish Ipods where cheaper...
Besides a really cool thing if you order it off Apple website is that you get free engraving, which is really cool if you can think of something to get engraved.
I've just bought one (a Limited edition Red product nano), and unfortunatly I couldn't think of anything to engrave on it... but because its free, I feel you have to use it to get you moneys worth.
My Ipo therefore says this on the back:
Hi my name is Claude
I'm a nano.
Beware of free engraving!!!

I miss my ipod dearly. It died after a little over two years. I missed listening to music (Central Station at rush hour is not a nice place), podcasts and the Message new testament. Just know some die after about 2 years. I wish I had a new one but am debating saving for the iphone instead.
